WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO MAKE AN OIL DRAIN PAN?

For this low-budget oil drain pan, you’ll just need an old oil plastic container, and for the funnel an old plastic oil bottle.

Besides the fact that this is free, another good aspect is that you can reuse old oil bottles and containers in a practical way.

One more convenient feature is that this pan has a low profile making it easy to slide under the car, also you get one or two handles and the bottleneck serves as a funnel for pouring the old oil out.

Besides all of this, to make the pan you’ll also need a scalpel or a sharp knife.

HOW TO MAKE THE OIL DRAIN PAN?

Before you start make sure that the old oil container is empty to avoid making a spill.

Next, put the container on a flat surface on one of the wider sides.

Which side you choose doesn’t really matter, the only difference is on which side the future funnel will be at. Left or right.

Then take the scalpel or knife and cut open the container. Be careful, do it slowly so you don’t accidentally cut yourself.

Then remove the lid and there you have it. Your oil pan is finished.

When you want to drain the oil out of the pan for storage or recycling, just open the cap on the neck and pour the old oil out.

Very easy, as you can see, the only downside is that it can hold only four liters of oil. So the bigger the container you have to begin with the better.

HOW TO MAKE THE OIL FUNNEL?

To make the oil funnel, you’ll need the old oil bottle (in this case it’s a 1 liter bottle).

Use the scalpel or knife again and cut the bottle in half. It doesn’t have to be half, the height of the cut depends on how high you want the funnel to be.

Remove the bottom and you’re done. Take off the bottle cap and you have your funnel.

Just make sure to remove the leftover plastic ring under the cap so it doesn’t accidentally fall off into the engine bay.

CONCLUSION

As mentioned the downside of this is that it can only hold 4 liters of oil.

It’s smaller than the usual oil drain pan and there’s a bigger possibility of spilling. Honestly, the aesthetic side of it all is not great either, if that matters anyway.

But, if you don’t have anything else at hand if you’re not in the mood for spending money, if you don’t want to ruin various washbowls around the house, or else, this is a very good and practical solution.

Of course, it’s much better to buy the real deal and buy the oil drain pan specifically made for this.

In the end, a wise saying from a very wise man would define this pretty well.

If it’s not pretty, at least it’s free.
