A short circuit is a very rare car problem, but when it does happen, it can cause serious damage.
It means that there is a direct connection between a plus and a minus wire somewhere in the car’s electrical installation.
Also, it can mean that you have a faulty electrical appliance.
In any case, a short circuit is pretty dangerous since it can cause, in more dramatic cases, smoke or even God forbid, a fire.
This is why it’s good to notice it on time, and this video should help with that.
Besides this website, you can also watch videos on our YouTube channel, where we have many car-related videos that may help with maintenance, driving, etc.
SYMPTOMS OF A SHORT CIRCUIT
1. THE FUSE FREQUENTLY BURNS OUT

The first sure sign of a short circuit is that the fuse frequently burns out. So, you change it and it burns out again immediately or after some time.
The fuse is the main line of defense against a short circuit, and when you see it burning out all the time, stop replacing the fuse and start searching for the problem immediately.
That’s the right time to do it to avoid bigger problems. To see how to change a car fuse, click here.
2. FLICKERING LIGHTS

Short circuits cause temporary overloads in the car’s electrical installation, especially if there’s a faulty appliance.
This then causes flickering headlights, dashboard lights, and others.
But this flickering only happens for a moment, so you have to pay attention to notice it.
For instance, the moment you try to turn on the appliance, the lights will flicker, and perhaps the fuse will blow out.
3. SMELL OF BURNING PLASTIC

In more serious cases of a short circuit, you may sense a smell of burning plastic. This symptom is a big red alarm for reacting to the problem.
The smell is caused by heating up or, God forbid, burning wire insulation.
Also, there may be an overloaded appliance, or some plastic parts around the wires are heating up or burning.
4. VARIOUS SOUNDS

Besides the smell, you may also notice certain sounds.
These sounds are hard to spot, and you can notice them when the engine is off and there is quiet in the passenger cabin.
The first sound is a brief, barely noticeable click sound; this is the fuse burning out.
The second sound is a sizzling one. If you hear this sound, react immediately. This sound is caused, in most cases, by wire insulation burning or heating up.
5. WHITE SMOKE

The last and most dramatic symptom is the appearance of white smoke.
The white smoke comes from burning wire insulation, burning plastic, burning appliance, or else.
It can appear in the passenger cabin, engine compartment, or anywhere where there is wiring and electrical installation, making it very dangerous.
Know this: when this happens, you immediately have to take action. We would recommend, if possible, taking off the minus battery clamp.
CONCLUSION
Know that the fuses on your car are very efficient and will prevent the majority of short circuits from escalating into a bigger problem.
The number one reason for serious problems is people who replace burnt-out fuses with ones that don’t have the same amperage. For instance, instead of 10 amperes, they insert 25 amperes.
In that case, the fuse becomes useless, and the smoking and fire have a much better chance of happening.
Some other reasons are poorly done repairs on appliances, pinched wires due to repairs, and so on.
In case of a short circuit, it’s best to start searching for the problem the moment you notice that the fuse burns out for the second time.
