Choosing the best driving shoes is very important.

When you’re wearing uncomfortable shoes when driving, you may have a serious problem.

Inadequate driving shoes will cause serious unease which usually leads to partial loss of concentration and no need to say how dangerous this is while driving.

In this article, we’ll try and help you choose the best driving shoes and avoid discomfort and trouble.

Besides this, you have a video at the end of this article provided by the Danka Praktik YouTube channel.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE THE BEST SHOES FOR DRIVING?

As mentioned, choosing the right kind of shoes for driving is crucial although often times disregarded.

The main reason for paying attention to this, besides comfort, is safety.

In good driving shoes, you should be able to properly press the brake, accelerator, and for stick shifts, the clutch pedal.

If you don’t have the right kind of shoes, they may easily slip or get stuck within the pedals and you won’t be able to react on time.

No need to say how dangerous this can be especially in a critical traffic situation.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST DRIVING SHOES?

1. WEAR SHOES THAT FIT WELL

Perhaps the most important factor for choosing the best driving shoes is that the shoe properly fits.

Too small and they will feel uncomfortable which is a huge distraction, especially on longer drives.

If it’s too big then the shoe is loose around the foot, again causing discomfort but even worse, it seriously reduces the time of reaction.

So, find shoes that are comfortable, that properly fit and let the foot breathe so to say.

2. SHOES MUST HAVE PROPER VENTILATION

Talking about the foot being able to breathe, find shoes that give the foot proper ventilation.

Our recommendation is to find shoes that are made from thinner, more natural materials and that possibly have some openings on them.

The ideal shoes for ventilating the foot are various types of sandals. But you must be careful to choose the right ones so they don’t jam in the pedals.

The sandals must have a firm sole and the toes must be well supported. The heel must also have a strap for better leverage and safety.

On this part, we must mention that enjoying comfortable feet is one of the major reasons why people choose flip-flops for driving.

We would recommend avoiding this as they are one of the most dangerous types of shoes for driving.

If you have to, then at least choose ones that have a heel strap, otherwise avoid them or even drive barefoot if you have to.

3. CHOOSE SHOES WITH A THINNER SOLE

If you want to choose the best shoes for driving know that shoes with a thinner and softer sole will provide a better feeling for the pedals and overall driving.

A stiff and thick shoe sole can be a problem since it prevents the foot to arch properly and press the pedal.

With a sole like this, the shoe can easily slip off the pedal, especially if it contains more plastic and rubber.

Also, if the sole is wider, it can accidentally press two pedals at the same time

Not to mention that it gives a clunky, awkward feeling on the pedals leashing the driver from the proper sense for the pedals.

4. CHOOSE THE RIGHT KIND OF HEEL

Regarding the shoe heel, this is a matter of personal preference.

For instance, lots of women like to drive in high heels and feel comfortable and safe doing it.

If you’d like to see some tips on how to drive in high heels, we have a separate article and video specifically on that topic which you can see by clicking here.

Others prefer a flat heel.

Comfort and proper leverage are key for making a choice here.

Know that most of the time the foot rests on the heel and a softer and thinner heel may be more appropriate, mainly because of how the pedals on the car are positioned.

Also, the inner part of the shoe heel should be softer for better comfort. The foot used for the brake and accelerator pedal is upright most of the time so it will help immensely.

5. AVOID SHOE LACES IF POSSIBLE

For the last tip about choosing the best driving shoes and this isn’t a must, try to avoid shoe laces.

Not that anything will happen in most cases, but here and there the laces can get loose and get tangled between the feet and pedals.

Shoes with velcro straps, slip ons or else are a good choice.

If you have shoelaces make sure that they are properly tightened before you start driving.

CONCLUSION

Our shoe of choice would be some sort of slip-on with a soft rubber-like sole. Something like the red shoes shown in the previous pictures.

These are good both in summer and winter as they provide good leverage on the pedals, good foot ventilation, decent comfort, and are easy to change and wear.

Next in line would be a nice softer sneaker.

In summer conditions sandals are great provided that they have a stiffer sole, good support for toes and they must have a heel strap.

Best avoid flip flops, various kinds of slippers, boots with thick stiff soles, or other footwear that can slip off the foot, slip off the pedal, cause any kind of discomfort, or else.

It’s your feet and your safety while driving that’s in question so all of this is certainly worth considering, especially if you’re going on a longer drive.
