HOW TO GET MORE GAS MILEAGE FROM YOUR CAR?

One of the most common questions among drivers is how to get more gas mileage.

When mentioning this, most people think about how to reduce a car’s fuel consumption.

But this isn’t the only reason. There might be a longer trip at hand, for instance, and gas stations are far apart.

In this situation, knowing how to get more gas mileage may mean the difference between driving carefree and being left stranded on the side of the road.

In this article, we’ll show one useful tip for adding some extra fuel that may help. You can also watch our video tutorial at the end of this article or on our YouTube channel.

HOW TO GET MORE GAS MILEAGE?

Before we start I’d like to say that the basis of this tip is to get more gas mileage by adding extra fuel to the tank.

More fuel means more miles and with this tip, you can get some serious extra mileage. Also, we’re showing this on a Skoda Fabia mk1, but the basic principle applies to lots of other cars.

The point of this tip is to use a simple ventilation valve that’s built in the filler neck on the gas tank.

In the case of the Fabia, it looks like a small black cylinder on the side of the filler neck. Once you take off the gas cap, you’re bound to see it. Other cars have the same or similar system in a similar location.

This is a valve that lets the air out of the gas tank when you pour fuel inside. Less air means you can pour more fuel giving you some extra mileage.

So how to this? It’s very simple, when filling up the gas tank, wait until the fuel pistol pops the first time.

After it does, press the valve with the pistol and you’ll hear a hissing sound coming from the tank. That’s the air coming out. Continue filling until the next pop and press the valve and vent again. Repeat as many times as possible, you can usually do it a couple of times.

You’ll know it’s enough when the gas pistol pops immediately after you press it and when you press the valve, you don’t hear hissing anymore

When you’re finished, put back the gas cap and tighten it.

So, to mention once more: this way you’re getting the excess air out of the tank and pouring fuel instead.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DO THIS?

I would recommend using this tip only when you’re going on a longer trip and refueling is questionable.

Otherwise, just fill up the gas tank until the first pop of the gas pistol.

From personal experience by using this tip, I can fill a couple of more liters of fuel, giving me some serious additional travel autonomy (about an extra 100 kilometers give or take 10 kilometers).

You should avoid doing this if you’re not going to drive the car for a longer period of time or you’re going to drive shorter distances.

In this case, the fuel won’t be consumed in a shorter period of time so it can possibly affect the EVAP system. But there’s no logic in doing this anyway if you’re not frequently driving the car.

Best do this if you’re going on a long trip when the fuel will be consumed at a faster rate.

CONCLUSION

One more piece of advice on how to get more gas mileage on your car:

Try combining this tip with other methods for increasing a car’s fuel efficiency. If you’re not familiar with this, you can read a separate article on that topic by clicking here.

Also, if you’re asking will it cause any problems: all that I can say is that I’ve done it dozens of times and had no problems whatsoever. On the contrary, it was a lifesaver several times.

But best see what kind of system is on your car and decide accordingly.

Whatever you choose, just make sure you always have enough fuel in the tank and that you can refuel on time.
